Our hike begins in the picturesque mountain village of Pines, where we set off on a narrow, traditional path on the outskirts of the village. The slight climb at the start takes us through a fragrant maquis landscape, accompanied by the aromatic scent of wild oregano and thyme.

Our path continues along easily walkable gravel paths and later between centuries-old dry stone walls that once enclosed the terraced fields of the region. This picturesque route takes us to the historic mills of Pines, a special resting place on our tour.

Here we take a short break to soak up the unique atmosphere of this place. The mills silently tell of the agricultural past of this region and invite us to linger.

The rest of the trail leads us partly through wild vegetation and is later rewarded with a truly breathtaking panorama: before us lies the famous Venetian fortress island of Spinalonga – once a leper colony – and the beautiful Gulf of Elounda with its turquoise blue water glistening in the sun.

For the way back, we choose a different path that leads us leisurely downhill through sparse olive groves, among other things. Thus, we return to Pines relaxed and full of beautiful impressions, where our eventful hike comes to an end.

Note on the route:
Some sections of the hike can be a little rough and lead us through wild vegetation at times. Long trousers are recommended here – otherwise you'll end up with scratched legs! But these little challenges are what make the tour truly adventurous!

The hike is possible all year round!
