Equipment
Practical recommendations from my own hiking experience
Hiking in Crete places special demands on equipment and preparation.
Many trails are rocky, uneven, or only partially marked. With the right equipment, you'll not only be safer on the trail, but you'll also hike more relaxed and with more enjoyment, regardless of the season or region.
Backpack
A good backpack is essential in Crete. Size is less important than a comfortable fit and good weight distribution. We recommend models with a mesh back for better ventilation, as well as shoulder, chest, and hip straps to relieve pressure on your shoulders and back. Additional storage space and trekking pole holders are practical features to keep everything within easy reach.
GPS / Navigation
Not all hiking areas in Crete have consistent mobile phone reception, especially in gorges or remote regions. GPS devices or navigation apps can be very helpful here. A sufficiently charged battery, mobile maps, and ideally a power bank are essential – as reception is not guaranteed everywhere.
Clothing
The right clothing depends heavily on the season and weather. In summer, light, airy materials are important, and sun protection for shoulders and arms should also be considered. In spring and autumn, temperatures often fluctuate significantly – cool in the mornings and evenings, warm at midday. Layering is ideal here, supplemented with rain or wind protection.
A few thoughts from practical experience
As you can see in our videos, we don't wander around with a handbag and flip-flops in Indian safety shoes. Proper equipment, such as good, sturdy shoes, a backpack, a fanny pack, hiking poles, and comfortable clothing, plays a crucial role.
Ultimately, the choice of clothing, equipment, and accessories is entirely up to you, as budget often plays a part. The most important thing is that you're safe and start each hike with care and in good health. Have fun hiking and exploring the beautiful island of Crete!
Note / Reality Check (optional, but highly recommended):
Not every tour requires the same equipment. The information provided serves as a guide to help you prepare realistically and avoid common mistakes, especially on lesser-known trails off the beaten track.
